2012 Lotus Elise Club Racer

2012_lotus_elise_club_racer

Lotus is making a little bit of a comeback having spent many years in the doldrums. Under the direction of new CEO Dany Bahar the company has hit the reset button and announced a completely new line of high performance road cars to replace its ageing fleet.

Part of this plan involves the company entering Formula One by purchasing the team formerly known as Renault. Having previously spent time at both Ferrari and Red Bull Bahar is very much of the opinion that motorsport participation can stimulate car sales. This is an audacious and risky plan which is alleged to involve the company taking out numerous loans to fund its expansion.

One of the first products to come out of Lotus in the Bahar era is the new Lotus Elise Club Racer, which is 24 kg lighter than a conventional Elise; an incredible achievement when you consider that conventional Elise already weighs 876 kg. This is despite the exterior appearance of the Club Racer looking very similar to that of the conventional model. These weight savings have been accomplished by fitting lighter components; with the battery, seat and noise insulation being prime areas of focus.

The 2012 Lotus Elise Club Racer version is powered by the same Toyota built 1.6 litre four-cylinder 134bhp motor which is fitted to the conventional model. However, with these weight savings, top speeds and acceleration times are much improved. The new Elise also comes with a Dynamic Performance Management system (DPM) for the first time, which for those not adept in the Lotus lingo basically translates into a sport mode. This tunes the suspension and anti-roll bar as well as activating an intermediate setting for the stability control. Basically, this means that the electronics can alter the behaviour of the vehicle to make it easier to drive for those who are less confident or less experienced.

The car will be available from £27,500 ($54,990) and comes in six different colours (black, Carbon grey, red, saffron yellow, sky blue and white). It might be difficult to justify this payment when you consider that driver comfort and things that are usually given as standard (i.e. noise insulation, radio and air-conditioning) are not included. However, emulating the Lotus fashion of old, this vehicle is all about performance and the removal of these things was necessary in order to ensure that the vehicle achieves it maximum performance. Despite driver comfort being compromised, quality has remained essential for Lotus who has sourced components from highly rated external partners such as Bilstein and Eiback.

Don’t forget that the lighter frame will also ensure less fuel consumption; reducing your annual fuel bill compared to the running costs required for a conventional Elise and appeasing environmentalists who criticise manufacturers for perusing such high performance vehicles. Lotus claims that the Club Racer version of the Elise will be capable of a very respectable 45 mpg.

Lotus Chief Technical Officer Wolf Zimmermann hailed the Elise as an “icon” of the sports car market, and proclaimed that the new Club Racer version is “fast, raw, responsible and a huge amount of fun to drive”. This could be the first step in the mission to get Lotus back on the right track, with the new Elise club racer having been met with overwhelming positive reviews from motoring journalists who have been lucky enough to drive the model thus far; many of whom who have complemented the vehicles handling and the pure driving experience that it provides.

All Lotus has to do now is make sure that the Elise is a more attractive proposition to petrol heads than what is on offer through its competitors. This means that they have to once again take on arch-rival Tony Fernandes who was alleged to have been interested in purchasing the Lotus car company before switching his attentions to British sports car manufacturer Caterham. This battle will even been taken onto the race track, with Caterham also now owning its own F1 team. This could prove to be one of the most fascinating battles of the coming years, both in F1 and in the automotive market and could possibly serve as conclusive proof of Bahar’s theory that on-track racing success ultimately impacts on car sales.

Tesla Roadster 2.5

tesla_roadster_2.5_4_11

With a price range of 109,000–$128,500, the Tesla Roadster 2.5 might seem out of reach for the average lover of fast cars. Consider though, that this all-electric beauty can accelerate from zero to 60mph in under four seconds, and combines the performance of a Porsche 911 with the environmental consciousness of the Nissan Leaf. Then remember it’s built in limited numbers, for only the most demanding customers.

Tesla doesn’t designate their cars with model years, so the 2011 version of their all-electric performance roadster, which was designed to compete with the Audi R8 among others, is merely referred to as the Tesla Roadster 2.5. But who needs a model year to distinguish a car that an travel almost 250 miles on a single charge of it’s all-electric, zero emissions drivetrain and takes only 3.5 hours to recharge its lithium-ion batteries for the next leg of a trip?

The car itself is comparable in size to the Lotus Elise, which makes sense since Lotus actually builds the Tesla chassis. Size aside, however, the carbon-fiber body sports LED taillights, and a finned hood, a soft top that is removable but can be replaced with a carbon-fiber hardtop, and a combination of 16-inch front wheels and 17-inch wheels in the back. In the sport model, those wheels are finished in a darker color.

Inside the Roadster 2.5 you’ll find a slight change from the former minimalism of the first version. Last year the a/c controls were moved to a more expected position below the sterio system, though you’ll still find that instead of a conventional gear shift there are buttons for Park, Neutral, Drive, and Reverse mounted in the center console. New for this year is an Infotainment seven-inch touch-screen navigation system, a 400 watt stereo with HD and Sirius radio, Bluetooth compatibility and the option for a backup camera.

The new seats are still leather and still heated, but now there’s better lumbar support and the bolsters are more supportive. An iPod jack is standard, and for a price you can wrap the entire interior leather, instead of just the seats. Conversely, if you’re anti-cowhide, you can opt for microfiber seats instead.

The Roadster 2.5 is powered by an air-cooled all-electric power system that offers the equivalent of 288 horsepower and 273 pounds-feet of torque in the base version and 295 pounds-feet of torque if you opt for the Sport trim. Acceleration is boosted by peak torque being available from zero rpm. The wheels are driven via a fixed gear, and, when decelerating, the motor can help recharge the battery pack, which, in turn, has a 6,831-cell lithium-ion battery that weighs almost a thousand pounds. Tesla says the battery will last for five years or 100,000 miles.

While the Tesla’s optimal charge comes from a home charging station, there is an optional plug that will allow it to charge from a regular 120-volt outlet, though it may take longer than the advertised 3.5 hours.

If there’s one area where the Roadster is a bit under-served, it’s in safety features. It has all-disc antilock brakes and traction control, as well as dual front airbags, but no side airbags at all, and no stability control, either.

The 2010 Maserati GranTurismo is a chic, two-door, four-seat, coupe that delivers a powerful punch. The Maserati GranTurismo is powered by an 8 cylinder 4,244 cc V90° engine and produces 405 bhp at 7,100 rpm. The load-bearing chassis allows for more rigidity and its high-resistance, box-steel structure permits the suspension to track every bump in the road allowing for a more smooth and comfortable drive. The powerful 2010 Maserati GranTurismo has a top speed of 178mph and accelerates from 0-60mph in 5.2s.

Owners of the GranTurismo have the option of installing the Skyhook system of shock absorbers with an aluminum body that constantly adjusts the damping. The technology automatically chooses the most favorable level of damping and combines with the calibration of the vehicle’s automatic gearbox and the MSP safety system. The result is that the car will become accustomed to each driver’s characteristics.

The 2010 Maserati GranTurismo is very light and compact. It displays a sporty edge with its sleek tight body design and large oval grille. The cylinder heads are made of aluminum silicon and alloy. The lubrication system contains a wet sump which minimizes noise which allows for a quieter drive. The Maserati GranTurismo has excellent reaction time due to its flawless weight distribution: 51% of the weight of the car sits in the rear and 49% of the car’s weight sits over the front end. The accurate handling is the result of rear and front. The exhaust connected to the V8 meets the most stringent anti-pollution regulations.

The 2010 Maserati GranTurismo achieves instant acceleration due to the ‘drive by wire’ throttle control. The system’s ‘anti-squat’ geometry prevents the rear end from squatting under acceleration. The system’s ‘anti-dive’ geometry prevents the front from dipping under braking. The GranTurismo features three chrome-ringed air vents set behind the front wheels, chic lines curving over the body that is elegantly curved from front to end. The graceful shape ends at the at the rear light cluster.

The interior of the Maserati GranTurismo combines luxury with a sporty edge. It contains a roomy cabin that includes Poltrona Frau® leather upholstery, electronically controlled front seats, many finished pockets and storage compartments, and Bose Surround Sound® audio system with eleven speakers. The interior is desogned to maximize comfort and ergonomics. The 2010 GranTurismo transcends style and fits the driver like a glove.
